Boost your Sustainable Life

While the in-person Sustainable Living workshops, events and nature tours delivered by Coffs Council remain suspended for the time being, a treasure trove of new online activities are your wintertime springboard to outdoor adventure and sustainable action.

From DIY nature tours for kids, to backyard garden makeovers, to 30 awesome sustainability tips in 30 days, Coffs Harbour City Council’s new online Sustainable Living program has all the inspiration and resources you need to fire up your passion, roll up your sleeves, fill up the knapsack and get back out into your favourite patch of paradise or uncover whole new worlds of adventure and reconnect with all the things that matter most.

It’s all there waiting for you – outdoors and online – and after a long few weeks of lockdown, what better time than now to create your new bucket list of actions and adventures and just get out there and do it!

Ever wanted to start your veggie patch but never seemed to find the time?  Well now is the perfect opportunity to get out and soak up the rays and to get your hands in the earth and create a little magic in your backyard. Join local home garden enthusiast and environmental educator Karla for weekly gardening tutorials on the Facebook page and get back to basics and grow your own food.

Make amazing compost from your own food scraps. Create your very own pocket of paradise and watch the native wildlife come share your wonder.

You can also make the most of utterly delicious garden-to-plate cooking from local MIDWASTE facilitator, Louise. Learn how to make the most out of the new season kale or how to turn last night’s roast pumpkin into today’s freshly baked pumpkin bread. Zero waste cooking has never been so tasty!

For those wanting to delve deeper into nature, whilst we’re not yet able to resume our Coffs by Nature program tours and experiences in a face to face format, our incredible local guides have been having a ball creating some awesome film and printed resources that make up our amazing new online book-in nature-based program, with all you need to set you off on intrepid adventures from forests to rockpools for all ages – including a whole series of tours and adventures for kids.

“While we never expected to have just spent so much time homeschooling in the last few weeks, don’t forget that nature can be the best classroom and there are plenty of inspiring kid-friendly activities and tours on offer with our Coffs by Nature program that are fun for the whole family. “Our free online program has been designed as a catalyst to connect in to nature”, says Andrew Davis, Sustainable Living and Community Programs Coordinator. “Since COVID restrictions began, Coffs Sustainable Living Team have been busy creating innovative new ways to inspire people of all ages to maintain, even deepen their connection to this amazing natural environment that we’re blessed to call home. And while face to face delivery isn’t possible right now, you can still spend time with our passionate and knowledgeable local tour guides and workshop facilitators online as the stepping off point to some amazing outdoor adventures and activities you can do in your own time.”

As part of the program, from June 1, you can also take part in a 30-Day Sustainability Boost. Every day for 30 days, a new sustainability action will be posted on the Our Living Coast Facebook page that you can do at home around Energy, Food, Nature and Waste-free living. Each task is designed to motivate your household towards finding a balanced way to connect with our amazing environment and live lightly. It’s also a great way to mark World Environment Day on June 5.

A brighter world tomorrow starts with living lightly today. Join Our Living Coast for a deep dive into nature and rediscover your connection to the gorgeous Coffs coast. Tap in anytime or subscribe to our e-newsletter and enjoy the regular ideas and inspiration.
