My Happy Space
With a new studio and new programs, Coffs Harbour’s The Art Dept. remains a place of creative play for everyone.
Late last year The Art Dept. co-ordinator Jess Miller inspected a property with great potential to house her growing art studio. It was only after coffee and a chat with her mum however, that she realised just how special the place was. Jess learned that the house was originally her great Aunty Pat and Uncle George’s house. It was this knowledge that ultimately lead to pursuing the new space.
The renovations on ‘Pat & George’s’ began, turning it into a functioning art studio. However, the lockdowns for Covid coincided with the opening of the first classes. Thus, Jess and her team used the opportunity to go back to the drawing board and redesign programs that would weather the storm.
The main changes to the programs at The Art Dept. include the introduction of ceramics classes and the development of a seasonal artist in residence program. With six pottery wheels and a kiln, The Art Dept. now runs 4-week beginner courses, clay dates and private clay play sessions which have proven to be hugely popular. The Winter Program at Pat & George’s has been created through a partnership with the studio’s Winter artist in residence (much loved local art educator), Donna Edwards. Donna and Jess have teamed up to deliver weekly adult & kids’ classes, weekend and holiday workshops, with some Paint & Sips run by featuring artists.
With much of the Winter program sold out and Spring program coming soon, watch this space.
