Voices Of The Community
People’s Library is a collaborative project to ignite the art of Oral Storytelling. Funded by the Bellingen Shire Council and Neighbourhood Centres, free story crafting workshops and storytelling events are open to all those 10 years & over from the Bellingen Shire Community.
Held at Bellingen, Urunga and Dorrigo libraries; the first workshops and Storytelling event in March were a great success.
Then in May, following COVID shut down, the Urunga community gathered online turning out a surprising number of participants.
With this month’s workshop due to be held in Dorrigo, the People’s Library will be playing it by ear. “We are taking it day-by-day to see whether we will gather in person, or remain online. We are putting this out for the community to decide,” said Voice Within’s founder Simona Galimberti. “The aim of the project is to hear from local storytellers, to create connection through story, help build confidence and skills around story sharing and reduce social isolation. What a time to launch a project like this one, where 2020 has taken us into forced social isolation.”
Working alongside Simona Galimberti for this project is poet and visual artist, Gumbaynggirr man Bernard Kelly-Edwards. Bernard and Simona have both felt great reward witnessing the storytellers grow into their story, from the workshops to telling their tale at the event.
“We co-created, all us participants, an interactive and sacred space for story to be shared, a space of holding people’s
vulnerability around oral story-telling,” said Bernard.
Join Bernard Kelly-Edwards and Simona Galimberti for a deep listening circle and creative story-crafting activities. The Day 1 workshop will be held Sunday, 12th July. Venue TBA in Dorrigo. The storytelling event will be held at the Dorrigo Library on the 25th July, 10.30am – 12pm. Open to all community.
